Volkswagen Passat

The Genesis G80 is poised to take over a significant part of the midsized sports sedan market, competing with automotive stalwarts such as the Lexus GS 350, Cadillac CTS, and even the German cars: the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes E Class. This Korean upstart has gotten a lot of accolades in just two years of existence, and now it stands to surge into the market.

Trims and Standard Equipment

There are six G80 trims available, with three different engines available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Two trims have a 311 horsepower 3.8-liter V6, two have a 365 hp 3.3-liter turbocharged V6, and two have a 420 hp 5.0-liter V8; each is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic technology. The EPA fuel economy ratings range from 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway for the rear-wheel drive base engine to 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway for the largest engine paired with AWD.

Standard equipment on the trims with the base V6 includes paddle shifters, Drive Mode Select, a rearview camera, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, leather seats with heated front row, and a navigation system with an 8-inch screen. A Sport Package of options can be added, bringing highlights of sporty interior and exterior accents, ventilated front and heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, and manual rear side-window shades. The optional Ultimate Package maxes out the entry-level G80 with a premium Lexicon audio system with 17 speakers, wireless device charging, a heated steering wheel, wood and aluminum interior trim, and much more.

The Sport 3.3T comes standard with a sport CDC suspension, dual auto climate control, dark exterior accents, quad exhaust, sport rocker molding, and sport-oriented interior elements such as contrast stitching, alloy pedals, bolstered seats, carbon fiber trim, and Nappa leather seating. The top tier 5.0 trim boasts bells and whistles such as a microsuede headliner, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Technology and Performance

The list of active safety features that comes standard across the '19 G80 lineup is impressive, with a rearview camera, forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic warning, high beam assist, and driver attention warning. Standard connectivity features range from Bluetooth hands-free calling to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; all controls are mounted on the steering wheel as well as being managed via touchscreen. The Heads-Up Display is standard on some trims and available on others to provide a view of critical driving information that lets you keep your eyes on the road ahead. The hands-free smart trunk opens automatically when you stand at the back of the car for 3 seconds with the key in your purse or pocket, making access most convenient.

The 311 hp V6 brings in best-in-class base engine power honors, while the top G80 engine choice, the 5.0-liter V8, delivers a whopping 420 horses. The 8-speed automatic Shiftronic transmission has steering wheel-mounted paddles and rev-matching technology for smooth shifting that you can choose to control yourself when you feel the whim. With Intelligent Drive Mode, you can also fine-tune the car's performance toward cushiness or dynamics at your ever-changing preference. The driving dynamics and handling of the 2019 G80 are well above average, as those who test-drive it will soon find out for themselves.
